Video Series: What IS a Rare Farm Breed and why does Dalby Farm (Scituate MA) Care about them?

Watch or read below!

Hi!! We’re Dalby Farm in Scituate, MA and we are a family owned, educational rare breeds farm… now be honest, have you just caught yourself wondering “…what even IS a rare farm breed?”

Not to worry- you wouldn’t be the first to ask and you won’t be the last!  Let’s get into it.

When we say “rare farm breed” we are largely referring to  “domesticated” farm animals that have a small and declining population, making them vulnerable to extinction. These breeds often have unique genetic traits, historical significance, or specialized functions that distinguish them from more common breeds. (I will get into some of those fun details in future videos!)

Endangered farm breeds can include various livestock like cattle, pigs, chickens, Turkies and sheep, as well as many .

So why do they become threatened in the first place?!

To put it simply, we live In a world where traditional agricultural practices are increasingly overshadowed by commercial interests. In the early 2000’s my mom Cheryl shifted the focus of our farm  from traditional “hobby farm” to one that aims to safeguard rare livestock breeds that are or recently were on the brink of extinction.

Our commitment is to play a small part in the existing efforts to preserve these bre eds which often focus on maintaining genetic diversity, supporting sustainable farming practices, and raising awareness about their unique characteristics and historical significance. The goal is to ensure that these breeds don't disappear but instead continue to be a part of agricultural heritage.

At  Dalby Farm, we are proud to introduce our endangered farm breeds as ambassadors for their kind, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with these rare and remarkable animals. As a pet farm dedicated to education and conservation rather than commercial markets, we provide a nurturing environment where our animals can thrive while helping to raise awareness about their endangered status.. By showcasing these breeds in a loving and engaging setting, we aim to inspire a new generation of environmental advocates.
