Watch or read below!

Welcome to Dalby Farm in Scituate, Massachusetts! As you may know, we are a rare breeds educational farm- dedicated to preserving, protecting and raising community awareness of endangered farm breeds.

Today, we’re diving into some of the most frequently asked questions about goat ownership. Whether you’re considering adding goats to your family or just curious about these amazing animals, we’ve got you covered!

“What do goats eat?”

Goats are natural browsers, so they love munching on shrubs, leaves, and grasses. A balanced diet also includes hay and goat feed. Always ensure they have access to fresh water—proper hydration is key for a happy and healthy animal!

“What do goats need for housing?”

Goats need a safe, secure shelter to protect them from the elements. A simple barn or shed will do, but make sure it’s well-ventilated and spacious enough for them to move around comfortably. Ensure they are closed in and locked away from potential predators every night.

“Do I need more than one goat?”

Goats are incredibly social creatures. It’s best to keep at least two together to prevent loneliness. Trust us, they thrive on companionship! We try to have 3 in a stall at all times when possible.

“Do I have to take goats to the vet?”

Regular check-ups, grooming, and hoof trimming are essential. Plus, don’t forget vaccinations to keep your goats healthy! We suggest learning how to trim the hoove s yourself, as well as locating a traveling farm vet, it will save you a lot of hassle and can be a game changer in emergent health events.

“Do Goats make good pets?”

Goats can be tons of fun! They’re curious and playful, making them great companions for families. But remember, they can also be mischievous, so be prepared for some goat antics!

Please also remember they are a commitment! Trying to plan a vacation? Make sure you’ve got someone coming by to give morning/evening feeds and time outside each day. It is irresponsible to bring animals home and then leave them to fend for themselves.

“What kind of Goat should I get?”

Are you thinking about getting goats and don’t know where to start when it comes to the breed? Popular breeds like Nigerian Dwarfs and Pygmy goats are great for families due to their friendly nature and manageable size. But remember, each breed has its own unique needs! Do your research and feel free to reach out with any questions!

Obviously as an endangered breeds farm we are concerned with population when we add a new goat to our farm family but that doesn’t have to be the same for you!
