Raising backyard chickens is incredibly rewarding, especially when it comes to collecting fresh eggs! However, to ensure your eggs are safe and stay fresh for as long as possible, it’s important to follow proper harvesting, cleaning, and storing practices. Here are some essential do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:
Harvesting Your Fresh Eggs
✅ Do collect eggs at least once or twice a day to prevent them from becoming dirty or cracked. ✅ Do use a clean basket or container to transport eggs safely. ❌ Don’t leave eggs sitting in the nest too long, as this increases the chances of contamination or breakage.
Cleaning Your Fresh Eggs
✅ Do gently dry brush eggs with a clean cloth or soft brush if they aren’t too dirty. ✅ Do use warm water (not cold!) if washing is necessary—cold water can cause bacteria to be pulled inside the shell. ❌ Don’t soak eggs in water, as this can allow bacteria to penetrate the shell. ❌ Don’t use harsh chemicals or detergents—plain water or an egg-specific wash is best.
Storing Your Fresh Eggs
✅ Do store eggs in a cool, dry place if unwashed, as they have a natural protective coating (bloom) that helps preserve freshness. ✅ Do refrigerate eggs if washed, as the bloom has been removed. ✅ Do store eggs with the pointed end down to maintain freshness longer. ❌ Don’t store eggs near strong-smelling foods, as they can absorb odors through the shell.
By following these simple do’s and don’ts, you can ensure your farm-fresh eggs stay fresh and safe for consumption. Whether you’re cooking up breakfast or baking a delicious treat, properly handled eggs will always yield the best results!
